On the fleeting nature of exceptional

Exceptional is rare.

Exceptional is difficult.

Exceptional is sort-after and rewarded and treasured by others and celebrated (but not usually by those who are exceptional).

It is impossible to be exceptional all the time, or even most of the time, or even any more than a small percentage of the time.

The people you know who are exceptional, are only a little bit exceptional in a little bit of their life.

There are very few percentages of exceptional people who are exceptional across the board.

Exceptional is fleeting (usually) and generally it happens over small-time intervals in quick bursts after extraordinary preparation.

Usain Bolt running 100 metres is exceptional.

Exceptional doesn’t have to be a sporting achievement or a musical achievement or an exam result or an act of kindness.

Exceptional can be applied to anything.

You can choose to work on something exceptional and work at an exceptional level, but you would not be able to sustain that for an indefinite period of time.

In the middle of working at exceptional, it would be difficult, really, really difficult and you would wonder if you would be able to continue.

That is because it is exceptional and that is what exceptional is.

It is possible to work or operate at a level beyond that of which you thought was previously impossible, but only for a little while.
