The indisputable power of falling down

Up at 6:15am today, short coffee, walk the dog in the rain, come back and climb into the shed.

90 Minute session on the bike of hellish intervals.

15 Minute steady warm up, followed by 4x 5 minutes of ramped warmups from 150 watts to 235 watts.

Straight into (what were supposed to be 5x 4minutes 30 seconds at 287 watts then 3minutes at 131 watts followed by a warm down.

This is a tough session (for me at least) trying to build my fitness in the winter for next summer.

I do it once a week now, trying to make it better each time, last week I failed halfway through the second interval, this week I failed in the same place again.

Despite how much I big myself up and the music I play through my headphones and how much I tell my self it needs to be done, halfway through the second interval the power just started to drop out of my legs regardless of how hard I tried.

So I failed.

I failed last week too, last week I stopped, just span my legs for 15 minutes and got off.

This week I went again for another interval, I didn’t even manage to hit the watts, I managed 3 minutes, then I went again and managed about 90 seconds and I was completely done, spun my legs for 15 minutes and got off.

So I failed again.

I didn’t even make the 90 minute session and I didn’t make the intervals, but what I did do is get back up after I failed the second time, which is better than last week.

I will try again and I will be a little bit better (not much, but a little) than last week.

It's not ideal preparation to go to a concert the night before and then go to bed late and get up, walk the dog then get in the shed and do this before you have a full day ahead of you, but it is surely better than nothing.

There is no way you can succeed every time you turn your attention to something…But you can try.

Falling down is essential for progress.

If you’re not falling down, you are probably not trying hard enough.
