Relevance

It is said that one of the things many people fear, about growing old, is their loss of relevance.

They fear they become irrelevant; they lose their usefulness in active society.

They stop making a contribution.

Perhaps this is a particularly “western” illness.

Relevance is what we all seek, because relevance is status.

We all want to be on top of the trends and the tastes and the temperatures of our tribe!

We fight for relevance now. It’s like we’re all getting old (or older)

We want to be a voice in the church.

We want to be an influence in the gang.

We want to have the coolest knowledge of music.

We want to be the fastest on the bike.

We want to be the benchmark, that other people are measured against, and we seek out any ruin that we can find, to get that.

It is toxic now though, the search for relevance, we find that it’s addictive and we need to have more and if we don’t find it, well, it’s depression.

Our society is about winning now and winning is about having more.

It’s about having more relevance, it’s about having more influence, it’s about having more money, it’s about having more profile, it’s about having more attention.

As always, in times of crises like this, the answer is in the direction.

But no one is going to sign up to less relevance.
