Whom do you value?

In the new job I started last week in Lisbon when I travelled to the ITI Annual General Meeting, I found myself in charge of and responsible for the most extensive repository of online dental implant education in the world.

The job title is Editor in Chief ITI Online Academy (global).

As part of my responsibility, and in fact, part of the reason I got the job, I will have to reinvigorate and reinvent some of the content on this platform.

As part of my interview and selection process project, I presented two online courses to the ITI group, which was validated by the ITI board.

One in dental business education and one in online dental nurse education.

It's fair to say that the members of the selection committee (from three different countries and all members of the ITI board) had never seen anything like the online nurse's course before.

I also presented that course to the ITI CEO, Alexander Ochsner, some weeks ago in Basel, and he, too, was equally impressed by the structure and format of that course.

The most wonderful and amazing thing about that course is that I never saw it until it was finished.

It was designed and constructed by a team at the practice who know much more about dental implant nursing than I will ever know, the dental implant nurses themselves.

They were aided by the marketing team here, and it was all overseen by Louise Goodwin, who was formerly my senior dental implant nurse, but now manages compliance at the clinic.

When Alexander viewed parts of the nurse's course 4-6 weeks ago, he asked me how much it would cost to put it on the platform.

I told him how much the course was priced at, and he laughed and said it needed to be at least twice as much and four times as much if it went to America.

The intention for this course is to go entirely around the world to more than 100 countries on the ITI's Online Academy platform.

And so, where this goes and what happens to it, nobody can really say, but what happens next is that we have a version of it in the UK still for the original cost because that had always been planned for.

If you would like to work in a place and come to a place each day where your team are inspired and massively invested to a point where they can design their own course and their own subject and then put it out to the world, why not start by introducing your own team to something that someone else did?

The guys involved in this course at our practice are exceptional but remember, of course, they're not actually exceptional because we believe there is no such thing as an exceptional individual, only ordinary people who do exceptional things.

Why don't you suggest that some of your ordinary people come and do exceptional things starting in June?

One of the huge benefits of this course is that you don't have to close your practice or send your team away anywhere else or pay for hotel rooms or trains, or meals. It can be put into normal working days where people can elect to do it in the evenings, and they do.

Try to empower and motivate the people that you work with and see what happens; the results are truly extraordinary.
