Any map

There is a story, an urban myth propagated by the organisational psychologist Karl Weick about a troop of soldiers who were lost in the mountains in a blizzard for several days.

They all thought they were going to die, not knowing what to do until one of the soldiers, rummaging through his backpack, found a map.

The soldiers were massively elated and felt that there was a chance. They packed up and moved on, got out and found their way back to safety.

It was only after finding their way back that they realised that the map was nothing to do with where they were or where they were going; it was for an entirely different place.

Most of the time, in a crisis, we need a map or at least someone who seems to have a map that makes us all feel better, and then we can get on with our work.
