Since our humble beginnings at The Campbell Academy where we put a sign on the practice wall and tried to start something good approximately three years ago, we have been lucky enough to welcome some fairly and spectacularly high level people to speak at our adopted home of The Riverbank.
These include (but not are not exclusive to) Danny Buser (Switzerland), Michael Bornstein (Switzerland), Thomas von Arx (Switzerland), Shakeel Shahdad (UK), Charlotte Stilwell (UK), James Ruskin (USA).
On 12th September we welcomed Dean Morton.
Dean is famous in Implant dentistry initially for his work with Will Martin and James Ruskin at the University of Florida. These guys wrote the book on aesthetic implant dentistry (literally) and also did enormous work on loading protocols which were developed into the ITI Treatment Guide on partially dentate loading protocols.
Dean now works in Indianapolis but originates from Sydney. He is a great speaker; warm, funny, hugely knowledgable with what is clearly a wealth of experience in the good and the bad.
From a dentists point of view interested in implants, his main points were as follows:
1. Manage patient risk. Researched loading protocols exist because they are proven to work. Every time you deliberately go off a proven loading protocol, make sure you tell your patient that you are taking a risk for their benefit and if they don't accept it then don't do it.
2. Get your implants in the right place. He suggests guided surgery.
3. Never, ever put a Zirconia restoration in a patient's mouth until you have trialled it with PMMA restoration to ensure the occlusion is correct.
4. Never, ever trim Zirconia.
5. Don't tell patients how long Zirconia will last because we don't know. We haven't been using it extensively for long enough.
6. His preferred full arch restoration in implant dentistry is a Zirconia framework with individual E-Max crowns.
He presented some great little research nuggets on short implants versus sinus grafting (for short implants read regular diameter 6mm implants).
He presented some great stuff on narrow implants (effectively no research below 3.3mm implants)
He was also extremely pragmatic and discussed the use of mini implants in elderly patients to improve denture wear with low complications.
All in all it was a fabulous night for the ITI Study Clubs of Nottingham, Leicester, Grantham and Sheffield. Thank you very much to Rob Dyas, Jason Wong and Alif Moosajee for allowing our Study Clubs to join together for a Monday night of excellent education and learning.
It never ceases to amaze me that there were in the region of 100 people who had free access to Dean Morton, some nice food and good company together with enormous knowledge to benefit their practice and we only managed to get about 20 attendees. The 20 who came got a lot out of that and it was a great evening.
