Course Outline

The Soft Tissue Grafting Workshop at the Campbell Academy provides detailed information and instruction on using soft tissue augmentation in implant dentistry and other disciplines.

Rajan will delve into the techniques and indications for the use of grafts in implant surgery, encompassing both autograft materials from a patient’s connective tissue and free epithelial grafts, as well as biomaterial alternatives using Geistlich products, Fibro-Gide and Mucograft.

Soft tissue grafting has emerged as a pivotal area of advancement for implant dentists. Gaining a clear understanding of when and how to utilise these grafting techniques effectively will be instrumental in distinguishing skilled clinicians from their peers, enhancing their ability to deliver superior patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

The Soft Tissue Grafting Workshop provides implant dentists with a thorough and practical understanding of soft tissue management in implant dentistry. This course focuses on equipping delegates with the essential skills and knowledge to enhance and support improved outcomes in soft tissue management during surgical procedures. With a significant hands-on component, the workshop helps participants understand the indications for clinical use of soft tissue grafting. It ensures they gain practical skills immediately applicable to their daily practice.

Following this workshop, delegates will:

Aims & Objectives

Day 1: Introduction to Soft tissue grafting and the Free Gingival Graft

Learning Aims:

1. Foundational Understanding: Develop a foundational understanding of the role and significance of free gingival grafts in maintaining soft tissue health and enhancing the aesthetics of dental implants.

2. Technical Mastery: Achieve technical proficiency in performing free gingival grafts using autogenous tissues and biocompatible alternatives like Mucograft.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand indications for free gingival grafts in clinical practice.
  • Learn the procedural steps for harvesting and placing free gingival grafts.
  • Appraise both autogenous tissues and biomaterials' benefits and limitations, such as Mucograft.
  • Implement best practices for pre and post-operative care to optimise patient outcomes.

Day 2: Further soft tissue grafting concepts and the Connective Tissue Graft

Learning Aims:

1. Understand indications and techniques: Gain in-depth knowledge and skills in connective tissue grafting from graft harvesting to placement to address aesthetic and functional clinical needs.

2. Aesthetic and Functional Outcomes: Understand the critical impact of soft tissue management on the long-term success and functional and aesthetic integration of dental implants.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify patient-specific needs for connective tissue grafts in aesthetic and non-aesthetic areas.
  • Learn techniques for harvesting and applying connective tissue grafts, including using biomaterials like Fibro-Gide.
  • Compare and contrast the outcomes and performance using autogenous connective tissue versus biomaterial alternatives.
  • Understand where it is appropriate within an implant patient’s treatment plan to integrate soft tissue grafting strategies.
  • Learn to identify and manage key complications of free gingival grafts and connective tissue grafts, including graft failure, donor site morbidity and other key concepts.

Mahomed graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2007. Since then, he has been dedicated to developing his skills and delivering the highest standard of care.  His professional journey began in 2008 when he was awarded the Diploma of Joint Dental Faculties from The Royal College of Surgeons, London (MJDF). Mahomed’s focus has been on promoting and providing patients with a strong foundation in oral health, subsequently building and rehabilitating their smiles and their function. This interest led him to Periodontology, and in 2009, he commenced a three-year Master’s in Clinical Dentistry in Periodontology at The University of Sheffield, which he completed with Merit in 2012. Following further training, he was recognised by the General Dental Council as a Specialist in Periodontics.

His approach is centred on patient motivation and prioritises non-surgical care wherever possible. When necessary, he performs surgical periodontal therapy, including surgical regeneration and mucogingival plastic surgery, using magnification and microsurgical instruments to achieve optimal results.

Recognising that dentistry is a constantly evolving field, Mahomed is committed to continuous growth and learning. He has completed a Diploma in Implantology at The University of Central Lancashire, which complements his periodontal training.

He is committed to his speciality and continual professional development. Mahomed is a member of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP), the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the International Team for Implant Dentistry, and Dentinal Tubules.

Jack, Dentist

My desired learning outcomes were definitely met. When I go on a course, I want to take away 4-6 things which are either new or improvements to my clinical practice that can be incorporated straight away, and the course has definitely achieved this. Raj is clearly an expert in his field. He is very engaging and approachable, and attentive to the needs of the delegates. His delivery is confident and easy to listen to."

Andy, Dentist

I was wanting to get an initial understanding of soft tissue grafting and how I could potentially use it to improve my patient care. I feel this was a very good overview covering a lot of information and practical skills in a short period of time."
