Tandem

There we were on holiday in Italy last week at the campsite that we always go to, you can read about it here. My wife Alison sent me off to hire some bikes with my two youngest kids, Rosie (13) and Callum (9). For Callum I got a Fatbike, if you’ve never seen one of these then Google them, they’ve got enormous big tyres. He was over joyed and delighted and it renewed his fascination with bikes of all types (BMX, Mountain bikes, Road bikes) Rosie and I arrived back on a Tandem.

My wife immediately assumed that this was the most ridiculous thing in the world, in fact refusing to get on the tandem until later on in the holiday when I managed to get her on for 1 ride. There were 9 of us on holiday and everybody had a go on the tandem. After the tornado that we encountered Rosie, Callum and I even rode on a 5 mile round trip to a village to get cash out of a cash machine because all the phone lines were down.

That is not the point though, the point is when you go to the bike shop and you’re on holiday which bike do you choose to hire? That might be the last time in my life I ever get the chance to ride a tandem (but maybe not) it will certainly be the last time I get the chance to hire a tandem on holiday in Italy in 2017. From now on this years holiday will always be known as ‘that holiday when you hired that tandem’. So just for the record as you read this now, I am the guy who hires the tandem and will always hire the tandem. I will never stop being ‘a tandem hirer’.

Go and hire your own tandem (or equivalent)
