Time...

Along while ago it came to me in a flash.

For those of you old enough to have seen the Eddie Murphy film trading places (and if you aren’t old enough you should get it) it is a rags to riches tale where he goes from nothing to trading in commodities on the New York stock exchange The commodity that he trades in is frozen concentrated orange juice which goes to prove the point that money buys commodities and money is not a commodity in its own right.

When you start to understand this concept it is really quite liberating but then it moves on to the next step which is realising that the commodity is actually time and time is the only commodity.

Understanding this at the weekend I took my son to a 5th birthday party at a soft play in Nottingham. He was going with some of his best little pals from school and I knew that he would be completely occupied for 2 hours without any interest in his father whatsoever. If I had arrived there and he was not interested in his friends I would have loved to spend the 2 hours running around the soft play with him but he has just got to the stage where he is not interested. I took my laptop and when I saw that he was happy and running around with his pals I spent the 2 hours writing a webinar for the ITI.

This allowed me to go home with my little boy when he has finished his party and spend a wonderful evening with my extended family who had come down for my brother-in-laws birthday.

Had I decided to spend the 2 hours at the party drinking coffee with people that I hardly knew I would have missed out on the wonderful evening because I would have had to sit upstairs writing the webinar.

I did the webinar on the Tuesday evening well prepared and it went fantastically well so the circle was completed.

Time is the commodity and I need to continue to organise my time as much as possible.
