Allow me to introduce Thomas von Arx.
He is an Oral Surgeon and an associate Professor at the University of Bern in the department with Danny Buser. He has been there for a considerable period of time.
His main interests in Oral Surgery are bone grafting, anatomy and apicectomy procedures. He is the best Oral Surgeon I have ever seen operate.
I have seen Thomas von Arx operate on two occasions on my two trips to Bern and became an immediate fan. I followed his research in apicectomies and now try to model my apicectomies a little bit on his (but not in any way as good).
I was once told by a Head and Neck surgeon that if you could do an apicectomy properly then you were a proper Oral Surgeon: I have never seen anyone do an apicectomy like Thomas von Arx. He is a careful, considered man, lovely in character and gentle, extraordinary in skill. He recently used his sabbatical that the University of Bern staff all get to travel to the University of Hawaii for six months. That sounds wonderful but the University of Hawaii is world renowned for its head and neck anatomy department and Thomas wanted to re-learn head and neck anatomy. The measure of the man I think.
With that in mind I contacted him at the end of last year to ask if he would provide a Master Class in head and neck anatomy for The Campbell Academy and he is due to do so on 8th June 2016.
The Master Classes that we put together have only really been about me wanting to get the most exceptional CPD just down the road from my house and that was the plan! I identified a while ago that I wanted to re-examine my knowledge in basic principles of surgery including anatomy, pharmacology and physiology and this is the first part of that.
Thomas will do an all-day Master Class called ‘Oral Worlds’ encompassing what he learned at University of Hawaii and putting it together with his extensive experience in surgery. If you’re interested in surgery it will be a cracker.
In the evening he will provide an ITI Study Club based around dental trauma and the treatment of that which is free for members and also for guests who have been to less than two ITI Study Clubs in the past.
It is a chance to have an exceptional day of CPD and the link to book is here.
We hope to see many of our friends at that, I think it will be a fantastic day.
