When does it stop, the pendulum swing?
When does it rest in the middle?
We have been through the tragedies and the turmoil of Shipman and Alder Hey and the medical profession 'needing to be brought in to line'.
We have been brought in to line and over the line and through the line in to the other end of the bell curve and to destruction.
In 'Black Box Thinking' Matthew Syed explains the implications of what happened after the death of baby P, of the purge and witch hunt against social workers which actually (allegedly) has led to more harm to children not less.
Malcolm Gladwell explains how three strikes in California, which was supposed to eliminate or reduce crime, caused an increase in crime.
When the pendulum swings it always swings too hard and it always swings too fast.
We know in dentistry that it has swung too hard and too fast. Is it at the other end, is it now coming backwards? Is it starting to stop when it has swung to far to the left and beginning to rotate back to the right.
For all of us involved in dentistry now (if we accept that that is the case) it's essential that we use all of our strength to hold the pendulum in the middle and not let it swing too far again to the right nor let it bounce of the centre and go back left again.
For the sake of patients we need moderation at each end of the swing.
