You may not have seen this, or you may even have seen it and just don't care, but last week, ChatGPT announced that they would start advertising as part of the searches for non-subscribers.

ChatGPT has lost billions in the setup for the last 3 years of trying to win the race to be the ‘first mover’, this is very much like TiVo, or Betamax video, on many, many, many companies that chase the dot-com bubble.

At the present time, if you look closely, there is a fascinating situation with the AI stock bubble, where there are only 3 or 4 companies that are just passing money between themselves at the moment, with no one actually making any profit. People have been talking about the AI bubble for a while, but there seems to be so much cognitive dissonance associated with it that people think the market can't fall or won't fall, or that AI is too powerful.

If you look at it practically, though, (and that's the only way I think I can do it), having to have a nuclear power station beside every data centre is expensive.

My nephew is working on machine learning and atomic energy, just about to start a PhD in some sort of subject like that that I don't understand, but what I do know is that if all we are doing in AI is searching over and over again which restaurant we can go to, or to give us a travel plan for our holiday, it's never going to become valuable enough to refurbish the costs that everyone is paying to build the power stations.

And so here we go again.

I'm old enough to remember the dot-com bubble and the crash and the crashes before that. We've had 3 years of the stock market propping everything up in ways that it hasn't done for ages; it's about time now, isn't it, for what they call a readjustment.

Are you ready?  Because you should be.

For the past 3 years, we all should have been making hay while the sun was shining, because at some point, always, the storm comes.
