Understanding the commercial aspects of your work is absolutely essential because, whether you like it or not, we live in a world where money has to be exchanged for goods and services.
If you take on a project without thinking or understanding the commercials, it will quickly turn into either an ego project or a charity project, which are entirely different from running a business.
