What we deserve

If you wait long enough (playing the long game), it usually levels out.

If you play the long game towards the end of the long game, you generally, on average, get what you deserve.

If you smoked 40 cigarettes a day from the time you were 16, you'll probably die before your time.

If you always eat the shit and put on tonnes and tonnes of weight, a similar sort of thing will happen. If you develop a set of habits and techniques to keep you well, fit, happy and healthy, you'll probably stay that way for longer than other people who don't.

Generally, and generally speaking, we get what we deserve.

Back in the day, my friends and I, and my friends' sons and Callum used to go down and watch the start of the Outlaw triathlon, sometimes a half, sometimes a full; the full was the best part. You would watch the start of the swim, the hooter would go off, 1500 people would swim into the sunrise, amazing, and within about 3 or 4 minutes, people were standing on the side of the lake who weren't fit enough to swim 3.8 kilometres, they weren't fit enough to swim 300 kilometres, but they'd signed up on New Year's Eve for an Ironman with their friends and thought it was a good idea.

They didn't train and didn't put the work in, didn't change their lifestyle, so they got what they deserved.

The same thing happens in careers.

It's not so many people who get to bluff their way through professional careers to a point of success.

The guys that get there and that are still there in their 50s and 60s and 70s, they usually earned it, usually earned it the hard way, by doing the work and getting on with it.

Generally speaking, we get what we deserve. It's always the outliers, the tragedies, the problems that occur for people who didn't get that, but in general terms, it takes time, look after people, put the work in.

It will be great, it might just take longer than it tells you on some of the things you're reading at the moment.
