It would seem in many circles that the people in positions of power and responsibility believe we have too many (golden) geese, and as a result, many of these geese need to be slaughtered.
One of the (perceived) advantages of this is that it will then be possible to slice open the said geese and extract many, many, many golden eggs from their insides.
The actual amount of gold is up for speculation, but the executioners must hope that it is enough to see them through to the end of whatever race they are running as individuals.
The alternative to the strategy, of course, is to care for and rend the geese. To look after and treasure them and nurture them and, with a little good fortune, they will present you with a steady supply of eggs and prosperity and security for an indefinite time.
Customers are geese.
Careful now!
You don’t want to be the guy who is trying to resuscitate a dead goose you have just strangled because you suddenly realise the gold is no longer coming.
Giving CPR to a goose or geese you have just killed yourself is an even worse look than killing it in the first place.
