For those of us who have the privilege of working in our own businesses, or for those of us who have the opportunity and advantage of working on projects or things that we take ownership of at work, the emotional grindstone is a thing.
This is when we become so invested in the thing, or organisation or device that we're working on, that we cannot see past it, and we push our nose harder and harder onto the rough surface.
We don't have the chance to look up, to see, to feel, or to self-assess, and so we just continue to take the pain.
More and more of the same pain that we say feels better, that we tell ourselves is necessary and that we think we actually enjoy.
Only when we (or someone else) break the spell and allow us to step back for a minute and to see and feel the destroyed end of our nose that's been pushed so hard against the grindstone that it's almost completely obliterated do we understand that we didn't like the pain after all.
Some degree was necessary to start us on the way or to get us going, but the addiction is based around emotion, and ego and self-preservation often take us down the wrong road to the wrong place when a little bit of self-reflection would have allowed us to put the brakes on.
