Shooting Fish

If you grew up in easy times, when all you had to do was shoot the fish in the barrel to eat, you might never have really had to feed yourself.

I first opened a business in 2009, in the height of one of the worst financial crises the country had ever known, which seemed normal to me, but it wasn't. Everybody else around me was in pain, but I didn't know any different, and so I grew up in a world of business scarcity and tightness and understanding numbers and making it work.

I built a 7000 square foot purpose-built clinic in 2019 with no money at all from the National Health Service or Capitation dentistry, and then COVID arrived.

If it's always been easy, you will never be able to feed yourself when it's difficult. Trying to imagine or understand what difficulty is like is helpful, because as sure as sure can be, difficulty will be here again in a minute.

The age of cheap money is gone.

The age of low inflation indefinitely is gone.

The age of stability (if ever it were here) is gone.

It's time to find another way to fish.
