Last week saw the end of TBOB (The Business of Business or Building the modern independent dental practice) for 2019.

It is really brilliant to get to the end and it was really, really sad.

Over 12 days, we built quite a relationship with the practices who came and it kind of feels a little bit like letting your kids go off to university, I think!

Last week we watched every practice present a strategic plan for the years to come and this is set up against a backdrop of a two-day module when they arrive, called you don’t know, what you don’t know.

It might be the closest that I ever get to standing on stage and hearing people sing my own lyrics back to me.

These guys quoted from books that we’d recommended and spreadsheets that we had given them, the work that they had done with people who we introduced them to, to develop plans that were actually quite staggering (some of which we have tried to steal for our own business, because that is how it always goes) just for a little while I allowed myself to feel really proud of what we’d done as these guys referenced in their slides and in their words, the things that they’d learned from the course and how it had helped them improve and build up their practices.

We know how businesses work for the people that have come before and had no doubt how it will work for the people that were there last week, our only job now is to encourage them to meet themselves together as a group, their own business peer review group now, set free to hold each other to account and to develop their own businesses as friends and learn from their own mistakes.

From our point of view, that is another 60,000 or 70,000 patients influenced through the practitioners who look after them, countless team members influenced and business owners and senior leaders in businesses who might have just a little bit of a clearer vision of where they would like to go.

Make no mistake, we just give them the tools, they invent the future for themselves, but they are off now and away, not knowing when we will see them again, but hoping we will.

Looking forward to hearing what a dent they have made in the world.

The next one starts in February, it is at the new place, if you know someone who might be interested in what I have said above then ask them to get in touch here.
