It's absolutely possible that 100 or 200 years from now people will look back and consider the development of the combustion engine as a bad thing.
Sure, we will think that at the time it served a purpose and took us in a direction that we needed to go to develop, but perhaps the downsides by that stage will have outweighed the upside.
It's probably true that we’ll look at other things in our life that we have now that make things more convenient or more accessible, and then we'll get to the other side and think that they weren’t.

10 years ago, I stopped all social media activity for myself; I was told at the time that it would cost me my career. I don't think it did; I don't think it was a bad choice.
The rush towards AI is probably one of the next things; it's frightening for people- what could possibly happen and what it could do. Perhaps it's OK to step back for a minute to utilise some of the advantages of it in a controlled way, but not to let it into every single aspect of our life, imagining there would never be a downside to anything that we thought was good to start with, only to find out later it has an unbalanced negative impact.
