In 10 minutes time…

Mostly on Monday this week, I'm writing two sessions to present at the Straumann Young Leaders Asia Pacific conference in Vietnam in a few weeks.

This makes no real sense at all: to spend the time on this and also spend the 5 days on the trip to Vietnam and back to speak for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.

I get very well paid for the lecture, but not at all well paid for the rest of the days around the lecture, and a 3-day trip to Saigon is probably not the idea of a relaxing holiday (especially flying through the Gulf).

I have reasons and rationale for doing things like this, and I do it, and it's cool, but I get lost down a rabbit hole of trying to produce the best possible thing that I can to the point of distraction.

One of the best things that happened was a call on Friday with one of the guys from Straumann who's really high up and works in Switzerland and is organising the conference.

He wanted just to go through some of my material, which I talked him through and which he was delighted with, and I promised him that I would deliver the abstracts and the slides by the middle of Monday.

All of a sudden, I had about 10 minutes left before I had to send them, and so I finished them and sent them.

It's quite a metaphor that (it works in my life all the time): If you only had 10 minutes left to get something ready to send, what would you do?

Do the 10 minutes, the best you can, and get out the door.

If you continue to do this, there'll be times when it's not quite right, but most of the time, the very fact that you were able to ship something before someone else makes you look like you're in the top 10%.

And the people in the top 10% always win.
