Yesterday, Revolut trialled facial recognition payment in a coffee shop in London.
The essence of this is that you use facial recognition from your phone to link to your payment card on Revolut. It then means that when you pay for your coffee, you just smile at the screen and the coffee's paid for and you walk away.
Apparently, it removes the ‘friction’ of trying to find your card or your phone or your watch at the till.
Apparently, people are so short on time now that those few seconds of figuring out how to pay on Apple Pay are too long.
This is all great, isn't it? Add those seconds up, and we'll have much more time to do... what?
People have been talking about a utopian, leisure-filled lifestyle for years.
Lots and lots of things can be done quicker, but are they making us happier?
Years ago we invented this maxim: ‘use technology to make us more human’.
I would much rather say hello to the person behind the till.
Maybe that's my age, and maybe that will become a luxury, but when personal interaction and humanity are a luxury, then it's a luxury that I'll be happy to pay for.
