6 years ago or thereabouts, I opened a dental practice in Edwalton, Nottingham.
It's not new now, in fact, it's old, but some of the stuff in it is still pretty cool, and what's coming next will be cooler again.
One of the things we did, though, was etch on the windows on the three different doors which enter the clinical area from the staff area, the phrase ‘game face’. We go around and show people on the tour, and many, many people have seen the Game Face doors and asked about them, but I think there may be a misconception about why they're there, and I would know because I put them there.
Game face isn't at eye level in front of you as you walk through the doors to ensure you put your game face on; it's asking you a question.
Are you prepared to put your game face on?
Are you ready to do your job the way you're supposed to do your job, because if you're not, you should turn around and go back upstairs until you're ready, and if you can't get ready, then we have to find something else to do. It's not good enough in a place like ours (or actually in any place) to do anything other than turn up every day, ready to go.
It's tough for all of us; it's hard.
I think it's called professionalism.
Whatever is happening elsewhere, stick it in a box, because the people that you're looking after expect that you have the ability to stick it in a box.
