It takes a very strong person to resist this over time.

Mostly it's unconscious.

We drift a little bit, slightly in the wrong direction, unconsciously.

We secure our position there, and then we drift some more.

Before we know it, someone has pointed out that we've drifted in quite a large direction away from what we thought we were or who we think people think we are.

I see it often, and usually it relates in some way or other to money.

It's usually an entitlement type thing of ‘I deserve this’.

We all do it.

I see it in myself, and I see it in my friends.

The only antidote, as far as I know, is to continue to work on self-awareness and to ask treasured people's opinions as to where you stand on things or where your position is, and listen to the advice.

Some of the worst things that happen begin from good intentions.
