Clarity of Purpose

Some people never get here, never even consider it.

The ancient philosophers in Greece would talk about humans being like the fleas on the back of a dog, where only a few climbed to the end of the hairs to see what was beyond the dog.

To me, this is clarity of purpose.

A little while ago I wrote about the difference between using stuff and loving family and friends and worshipping your God (purpose).

There is a gift in this, a real contentment of understanding where you're going and why.

It doesn't matter whether you get there, whether it ‘works’. It's about having somewhere to go, and having a reason to go there.

It's been a couple of weeks of thinking about that really deeply for me.

Trying to find purpose again, trying to find the handle to grab hold of, to pull myself up and forward.

It takes a very, very special person to be focused on the purpose all the time, and I am not that person.

What's essential, though, is to be faced with choices, different directions in which to turn, and then to have the time and the space to think about those directions, and to wonder why you would go there and what the consequences might be.

You can't see them all; you can't see the future, but you can stick to your values. Stick to the things that are most important to you and look after the people who are most important to you.

As always and forever, your own oxygen mask and those closest to you must go on first before the wider oxygen masks go on for other people, and so it comes back to what you're doing and why.

I was at the gym for a sneaky session today, trying to fit in something which didn't really fit before I got the train to Cheltenham.

Loads of people there, not knowing what they were for or why they were doing it. Some enjoying it, some definitely just going through the motions.

I realised I was going through the motions.

I went in the pool; it was like human soup. Loads of alphas in the fast lane, trying to score points against people they didn't know.

No point in me being there, so I got out after just a few lengths. I went and did something else which was more directed towards what I'm trying to do.

Thinking like this lets me find clarity of what's coming next, of what the future's for, that I don't always have.

It's been coming for a while, this, and a few decisions here and a few decisions there, and we will be on the fast track to the place I'm supposed to be.

Find the space to think.

There is wood, and there are trees, and it is possible to see them both at the same time, but they're not the same things.
