So we were laughing the other day...
.... my friend Craig and I who were at dental school together and who were cycling in Spain at the weekend on an epic adventure.
We were talking about what would happen if our plane was late coming home and how we would deal with patients the following day if we didn't get there. We both had surgical days the following day but Craig's (who is a Maxillofacial Head and Neck surgeon) list seemed a lot more important than mine.
We were laughing though about people we know in those situations who use the "Do you know who I am?" line when the complexity of life gets in the way and they can't return back from where they were or haven't got a table at a restaurant or can't get a taxi.
This of course is one of the most ridiculous lines you can possibly use, it is in fact a rhetorical question. if the person you're asking did know who you were and attached the same significance to your title as you do, they would of course catapult you up the line or arrange for another flight or drive you home themselves or whatever. The fact that you have to say that line means that they don't know who you are and are in fact not interested because they don't hold you higher than anybody else in the crowd that is waiting for the cinema or a biscuit or whatever else you were waiting for.
The flip side of this is the "Are you...???" question. That's an entirely different matter and as I learned recently at the British Dental Conference there are particular ways you should deal with handling that question and sometimes I don't do it very well. To be recognised by other people who you don't recognise is at first a little bit weird but is a compliment and a privilege. What it must not do though is turn into being expected to be recognised by people who work in airports in other countries who are just trying their best but don't actually give a damn whether you get home in time or not.
Always good for a laugh for the rest of us though when the egos emerge to make themselves look even more ridiculous.
