In keeping with the recent posts about building a brand and learning to say no I was having a social media discussion with my friend Stuart and he sent me this classic film clip.
I worked with a guy who ran as fast as he could in the dental business world until he was 46 and almost broken. At that stage he was able to sell his practices for a lot of money and retire (although still be a clinical dentist) from the business of dentistry.
That is a choice and I have 5 years until I reach 46. I could go as hard as I can 20 hours a day from not until then, trying to build a business I could sell off in my mid - late 40's and retire but that is not for me.
I would rather build something more slowly and carefully, nurture it and still be doing some dentistry when I am in my early 60's that I love and enjoy.
The same thing applies to triathlons. I could do an event every weekend, get faster, faster, faster, qualify for GB, do iron man or I could select my events really carefully. Just a few a year and train consistently and safely and try and keep my fitness in shape until I qualify for GB in my 70's.
I have always looked like the guy who will burn twice as bright for half as long but it's time to change the intensity of the brightness for the longevity of the burning.
