Faramir

Thanks again to Seth Godin for reminding me that the world can be divided into quotes from Lord of the Rings.

There is an absolutely pivotal part of the story in Lord of the Rings where Frodo (the unlikely hero who carries the ring of ultimate power to it’s ultimate destruction) meets Faramir of Gondor in the wild.

Faramir has a company of armed men with him and is also the brother of the character who tried to take the ring from Frodo by force. For those of you who don’t know Lord of the Rings, the ring would grant ultimate power to whoever held it but would be their undoing and would ultimately turn them to evil.

It’s draw is irresistible. The point though is that Frodo offers Faramir the ring freely because he feels he can’t carry it anymore. Faramir says to Frodo (paraphrased) “You offer me the ring freely… a chance for Faramir of Gondor to show his quality” Faramir then proceeds to close Frodo’s fingers around the ring and helps him as much as he can to destroy it.

A rambling Lord of the Rings blog, but why?

I believe that everyday we have a chance to be like Faramir, sometimes once and sometimes in many ways and in the smallest possible ways we are allowed to show our quality. The problem is not that we have no opportunity to show our quality; the problem is the difficulty in taking the opportunity for all of us to be like Faramir and show our quality.

Try it just once tomorrow. Try to show your quality and see what that feels like, it’s addictive.
