The difference between getting and having

Sometimes the blogs I write just seem to be regurgitated Seth Godin and this one is no exception. The inspiration for this post is here.

It's ok though to regurgitate Seth Godin's blog posts because very few people that read my blog seem to read Seth Godin's blog and I also have a different take on the stuff than he does so recycling ideas is not a bad thing I think, but a good thing.

There is considerable difference between the 'getting' and the 'having' and in many respects, as I look around,  the getting has become more important than the having.

When I read the blog by Seth, for some reason I was reminded of Christmas Day or Fathers Day or Mothers Day or birthdays; the excitement of opening the presents followed by the disappointment or disregard once opened. You know that old thing where you have bags of things beside your bed that you got for Christmas that are still there at the end of January, unused and untouched?

I guess this is the difference between the getting and the having. Life has become 'the getting' and we have forgotten the joy of 'the having'. I would rather receive one thing that was thoughtful and something I could cherish for the year to come than receive 1000 things of lesser worth.

I would rather have to work or train or abstain to achieve or receive than to easily come by 1000 things of lesser worth.

It has taken me a long time to get to this place and as I talk to people (very few you can talk to about this) and look around people think i'm nuts because I stepped off the belt and stopped the chase in the collection of things and the competition with all the others.

If you can take a minute and create some space in your life to think about the difference between getting and having... I promise it is a nice place to be.
