IT for dentists – a recommendation

Since coming into the practice in West Bridgford in Nottingham in 2008 I have been beset time and time again by IT woes including two failed hard drives leading to extensively loss of information both in 2008 and 2009.

Those were devastating times, extremely stressful and terrible. I have dealt with both the major IT companies in dentistry but one in particular and it seemed that when we encountered a problem they didn’t have any idea of how to fix it. The real problem was identified when one of my patients came to the practice who has his own IT company and I was discussing this with him and he asked to see the server. The central server was a small, slim PC (the same as all the rest in the practice) under the desk in reception this also ran the reception computer. On seeing this he laughed and laughed and laughed. He couldn’t believe that a business which relied so heavily on IT and which turned over the money we turned over was running a server that was so pathetic and ridiculous. This was on the advice of the IT company we were using.

Eighteen months ago we decided to upgrade our IT entirely when we installed a new CBCT scanner (our second) but also CEREC and we invested a fair amount of money in putting in place a proper business set up with a central protected server and cloud backup. This was after we had spent £8000 with the aforementioned IT company putting in place a ‘server’ which in fact was not fit for purpose and was already 5 years out of date, we were well and truly stitched up as they did not seem to know what they were doing with server management.

The person we used for this was Chris Law who is a local, Nottinghamshire based IT guy with his own business and he is truly fantastic. His response to problems is incredible and his knowledge and understanding of network server based systems in small businesses is better than any I have ever seen.

The only reason for writing this blog is to recommend Chris to you if you’re in small business and looking for an IT solution.

IT is one of the big drains on finances in a business but it is also one of the important things to get right so that your business runs smoothly and you can walk into the practice every Monday not expecting a computer crash or difficulties with your system.

Since transferring to Chris the system has been almost entirely seamless, any tiny little bugs are fixed almost instantaneously. We also have a fantastic dial in system to the practice so that all the clinicians can dial in remotely to do case notes, view cases and report scans etc. It is a proper 21st century system.

I thoroughly recommend it and I thoroughly recommend you speak to Chris -
