Beans and rice…

Colin Campbell

Is a reference to Seth Godin’s much used quote about ‘having enough’.

Once you have enough to pay for beans and rice and a roof over your head then you can go on to think about important stuff.

It seems to me that I live within a very privileged group because almost everybody I know, either through work or otherwise, has passed this point. I guess the thing is that very few people I know realise they have passed this point.

Once you have enough to have a house and a car the only thing you can do is either have a bigger house and a bigger car or more houses and more cars. Once you have a house, you have a house.

“I need more space” or “I need a better/bigger car” is a fallacy. “I want” is different to “I need”.

Tim Ferriss (he of the podcast and the interviews with many excellent people) once said that the fear of man has become getting fat and answering emails. Hands up if that applies to you (unfortunately I think far too often it applies to me)

If we could just get our heads together with good people who understand that all of us have enough for beans and rice, imagine what we could achieve. Imagine the cool things that we could do if we didn’t think that all the time we were in competition with each other and infact we worked together to make things better. This isn’t just a reference to dentistry but dentistry is a good enough place to start.

Some of the cool stuff we are doing this year, like the DES Conference, or the Failure Conference we are running are just happening because they can; because they’re something good. It’s a shame that often when you do this good stuff so many people view it with such suspicion. I promise there is nothing to be suspicious about.

Try it today or tomorrow – do something great that you want to do and remember that it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work because you have enough money for your rice and beans.
