This weeks album is ‘I speak because I can’ by Laura Marling.
I was first introduced to Laura Marling in 2007 with the single ‘New Romantic’, which I heard played quite a lot and then heard live on Zane Lowe. I am a sucker for anyone who can pick up an acoustic guitar and sing along but this lady is an artist in the true sense of the word, it wouldn’t surprise me if she designs her own cover art and paints and writes. Her lyrics are quite abstract and full of pain and angst and something bad has happened to her in the past I’m sure.
The album is sad but angry sometimes but sometimes beautiful. It was quite apt to listen to it this week especially as there is a song called ‘Goodbye England (covered in snow)’ where she talks about how much she loves England when it is covered in snow.
The title track ‘I speak because I can’ is number 10 and is beautiful. In the version I have from iTunes there is a bonus video of ‘Devil’s Spoke’ which was the main single from the album.
For me, the best song and the reason I bought the album is ‘Rambling Man’. This could be Bob Dylan in female form. It is a truly wonderful song with wonderful lyrics and is one I have returned too since 2010 time and time and time again.
It is the last of the three in a row sad albums, next week will be Daft Punk, which is much more upbeat and something that I have really wanted to further explore for ages. I needed something a bit more cheerful or people would start to think I was a smiling depressant!
On my set up on my phone ‘I speak because I can’ goes straight into Laura Marling’s next album ‘Once I was an eagle’. If you like this album where she is able to show a thousand different styles in one album (this girl can sing in any way she wants) then you would also love the second one.
