In a conversation on the bike with my tri coach Simon, he told me about a VW camper that was passing up the motorway beside his wife's car (he wasn't there but she recounts the story) and on the back of the camper van was the sign 'Adventure before Dementia'.
As she passed the cab they were an old couple, and by old I mean 60 or 70 years old, driving along. She tooted her horn and waved and they gave her a thumbs up, a wave and a big smile.
As I enter what I hope is the second half of my life (and not the least 5%) perhaps this is a philosophy that I begin to adopt more and more. Many years ago on a Sunday night drinking wine with my next door neighbour and friend Simon he encouraged me to take the next day off sick. I refused to do that saying that I was a professional guy and I never let people down in that regard and he said to "if you take tomorrow off sick to play golf you will never forget it, if you don't you will never remember it". The sad thing is that I didn't take it off work and I can't even remember what decade that was.
In Baz Luhrmann's song 'Wear Suncreen' he extols the value of 'do one thing each day that scares you' and it's probably right. It's probably time for adventure before dementia.
