In the past few years, the way my life has changed, I've got to know some of the people who are some of the best at their craft in the whole wide world.
People who do dentistry that is from another planet or even from another galaxy, that can never ever be replicated by mere mortals or normal humans.
Almost always, these people cannot scale a business to a larger size.
They would love to because they would love everyone to do the dentistry that they can do, but it's not possible for them because their character doesn't allow it.
This is the brave warrior; this is the wise monarch.
Brave warriors don't build big businesses; wise monarchs build big businesses.
This is the personality type that Rachel Turner discussed in her fantastic book about startups and venture capital.
The 3 personalities that exist in a business that goes from small to large.
Number 1, the brave warrior.
Number 2, the considered architect.
Number 3, the wise monarch.
It's possible to get bigger, and it's possible to get better, but it's very, very, very difficult (almost impossible) to do both at once.
It's much more likely that you will see someone who takes money from somewhere else, and tries to get bigger, and gets worse and worse in the process until all they're doing is managing the sewage and not very well.
There is so much of this about.
On the other hand, you can get better and better and better, but you can never delegate that to someone else, because they won't do it as well.
Then the problem is that there is no chance to get bigger, and then you're stuck in a grindstone of your own making.
A difficult circle to square this, eh?
Well, not so, not really; you just have to choose which route you want and then go.
The worst thing is to get caught between the two.
