Because I like it (built it)

One of the things that proves difficult for the practice owner, the business owner or the brave warrior is keeping things together is not to build things in their image, thinking that other people will like them.

The classic example is the website.

Time and time again, I see dental websites (very much like the ones I used to produce for my own businesses) that are a monument to the person who runs the practice.

They spend ages of time and loads of money building a website, and the front page is a picture of them telling everybody about how good their practice is.

This is not what a website is for and not how a website works.

It’s generally not how marketing works at all.

Just because you built it or just because you like it doesn't mean that they will like it or that they will use it.

When you're building something like this, build it for them; it's not for you, that never works.

Back in the day, when I got diagnosed with my thyroid disease and I was trying to go and ride the Haute Route 5-day event in the Pyrenees, Alex supported me through that when no one could see. In the lead-up, he even pushed me up a hill.

He wrote a blog after that, which I've kept, and I'll never publish because I don't have guest bloggers here - sorry.

But I remember it, and I remember it well, and so what he said at the end of that was chapeau, and that is what cyclists say to each other out of respect, and when they are impressed.

So, chapeau, Alex.
