Try them, both of them.
They work.
The right people respond to vulnerability and also to kindness, neither of these two things are signs of weakness that you should hide or protect yourself against.
Whilst we are on the subject, looking somebody in the eye and telling them that you are sorry for what has happened to them (whatever that may be) is not only the right thing to do in difficult circumstances but it’s also called being a human.
