Last week we finished the first of our TCA CBCT course, the third edition of this. Fantastic course, one that I really love to present on and once again we managed to attract just the most amazing group of delegates.
These courses are all designed for small group teaching in ‘enhanced CPD’. It allows us to bespoke courses to individuals requirements and the range of people on the course was extraordinary. From a dental student doing his elective studies, to a hugely experienced implant dentist who speaks internationally and an endodontist. All through my two days of presenting this case though I was reminded of the fact, the ridiculous fact, always in these situations the speaker learns more than the delegates.
Sometimes this does in fact feel like fraud as we’ve charged a considerable amount of money for people to attend, and I am sure that everybody that came on the course in the last two days feels as if they have learned at least something. But for me from the discussions in enhanced CPD group learning is astonishing. To share the experience, the referencing of literature and the discussion of cases that we have encountered enhances everybody but the speaker probably more than everybody else.
It’s for this reason that I try to encourage as many people as possible to take up opportunities to talk and speak.
There is no such thing as an expert, there is only people who have made mistakes or have more experience in one small aspect of life or profession than others. Everybody has something to share, this is demonstrated by the people who have stood up to speak on our failure conference this year, people from all walks of dentistry. We are even trying to include a patient in this to speak because everybody who speaks at something like this learns, gains and grows. Where ever you get the chance or the opportunity to do this then consider very carefully before you actually turn it down because its one of the most amazing experiences in the world to have the privilege to stand in front of a group and share some knowledge that you have only to find out that you gain much more knowledge back. (And often get paid at the same time)
