Things to come in the next few weeks

At this time of year and around the Colin Campbell blog land, we have to think about what's going to happen between Christmas and New Year because Millie, our super blog editor, is off, and I start my next sabbatical adventure on the 21st of December.

I'll write much more about that as we go through the next few weeks, and I intend to continue to write throughout sabbatical 7.0, which is the seventh time I've taken more than six weeks off at this time of year.

This year's sabbatical 7.0 will be slightly different than they all have been. There are some work aspects scheduled in, but nothing clinical or to do with patients and not really anything directly to do with the practice or the business, just development stuff, moving forwards, some podcasting stuff, a crazy TV idea I've had and various other things.

But over the Christmas period, we have to produce some content in advance so that we know that the blog will be well looked after and will run.

I don't have the opportunity to write immediately and instantly because Millie and I do this together, and she really needs some time off listening to the sh*t that I say on a day-to-day basis.

With that in mind, I intend to do two little mini-series through the Christmas period into January.

The first of these is going to be an introduction to implant dentistry for anyone who would like to get involved, the pitfalls, the difficulties, and the reasons to do it.

The main reason for this is that I've been involved with the most extraordinary calls with people at the most extraordinarily high levels of the dental implant education world over the past year, and what is absolutely clear is that they're all terrified of the fact that there are not enough people doing dental implants around the world.

This is becoming a huge factor for Straumann because they realise that there are plenty of patients and that they have plenty of implants, and they have the ability to get the patients to the implants; they're just losing the ability to get the people to put the implants into the patients and therefore it will affect their ability to grow.

It means that companies like Straumann and all the rest of the implant companies will be paying much more attention to try to get dentists to be able to train to place implants and therefore, there will be much more opportunity to do this.

What a great place to be if you're someone who's thinking about deciding to bring this into your practice. It would be hard to believe there would be a better time to do it than now, and it's extremely wrong to think that you'd missed the boat.

The second little series will be a little basic series about business in dentistry, which has become one of my later career fascinations, as many people will know from this blog.

More and more, we want to share some insights, some learnings and some experience of the things we've done wrong as we built the Campbell Clinic and Campbell Academy 1.0's new facility that opened nearly four years ago but as we move towards Campbell Clinic 2.0 which is the next facility we're building and then on from that to the rest of the facilities we intend to build, moving forwards over the next couple of decades.

What's interesting about this is that we'll never ever have enough time to share all the things we want to share, and we are desperate to do this for no other reason than it may help other people to do the same thing (this is the 'why' of our business).

I'm also writing some articles for the ITI journal on dental business, but even on from that, Hayley and I start in the second week in January on a new business education course that we are delegates on.

This is a course which will teach us to be better business owners or managing directors or whatever it is we are supposed to be in a situation that will allow us to meet people who have bigger businesses than ours and to learn from them how they did it and to learn about systems and to learn about all aspects of business, from finance to marketing, to sales, to human resources again and again.

So, the good people at Nottingham Trent University that we've used before.

Hayley and I did a similar thing back in the day before we built the Campbell Clinic 1.0, and so for us, from January until April, it seems important to do that, but we'll obviously be able to share what's going on with that and to share some of the insights we've gained.

There's tons of other stuff going on here (we got our first publication in clinical oral implant research this week), and by the time we come back from holiday in January time, even though I'll be on sabbatical 7.0 there'll be more publications coming through like our publication on sedation and then the development of our peri-implant disease publication and all the rest of the stuff that's happening.

So, watch this space and keep reading; there'll be plenty to keep you going over the Christmas period.

See you soon.
