On the 15th July 2019, we officially launched the new Business Course for 2020.

At The Campbell Academy we call it TBOB, the year long, modular, business course. Its proper full Sunday name is “Building the Modern, Independent, Dental Practice”, but in all honesty this could be a course for any industry.

We have successfully run three cohorts of this course and have now gone through an extensive redesign process to improve it for 2020 for when we move into our new facility at the Campbell Clinic building in Nottingham in January 2020.

When I first set this course up with Gary Marvin of Straumann I felt myself getting extraordinary doses of imposter syndrome.

Gary reassured me that people would be interested in looking inside our business, aspects in which we have developed, and be sure that people would want to know how we had done it.

The financial aspects over 10 years speak for itself, but more than that the protection that I had to put in place so that I understood what was going on in all aspects of my business are the things that really under pin the course.

For many years I have considered the question “why am I doing this?”. This was particularly pertinent when making a decision about, and I had to move at short notice, the location I am currently in after a practice I worked in was sold to a corporate.

I left with pretty much nothing and came to the practice as it is now, to start from scratch again.

That was a big moment of “why am I doing this?” and that is pretty much how we started the first module of the business course.

The modules on the course are two days long and there are six of them.

The first module focuses on philosophy, Your business and Not Our business, and what you want to do and achieve going forwards - for you, your team and your family.

We’ve also introduced different aspects of running a business and it is amazing how many gaps there are in all areas of work that we’re starting to plug at. The secret is finding the biggest gaps and plugging them first; that’s what makes the biggest difference.

You don’t turn up at the course cold. You get all of the reading material you need to bring you up to speed as well as introduced to online projects to complete before you attend.

You have an online discussion platform, which we have reinvigorated for next year and an online portal for the submission comments and modifications of the projects that you deliver.

In the second module, we go deep into finance, but not just profit and loss (in fact hardly profit and loss at all). We drill deep down using analytics that we have invented ourselves to analyse dental practices and keep performance indicators that we have created to show all aspects of the financial elements of your business and how it might do better.

Much more than this we give you an insight into the numbers and how to read the numbers to improve your business.

This is perhaps the greatest thing that people discover when they looked into our business which was different to what they had seen before.

Third time out is marketing, and we have some marketing experts and amazing stories from different marketers in dentistry to help move your marketing on for your own business.

The fourth module is human resources, human assets and non-financial monitoring. All the things in your practice that you can monitor which aren’t related to the money, which makes it better.

The fifth module is centred around leadership strategy, how to take what you have learned from the first 4 modules and put it into a recipe for the next few years.

The final module is a presentation of the next three years of Your business, where You will take things from here and how the course has influenced the path of the business that You are moving forwards.

One of the greatest philosophical things about the Business Course though, is that it is designed for two people to attend. That means that the boss, the principle or the head person comes with their right-hand man/woman. It promotes delegation and communication and when principles leave the course, they should have risen up to a higher level in the business, allowing them to direct properly around the right-hand person to take on the operational running of the business.

The 2020 version of the course will be in our new purpose built clinical and educational facility, if you haven’t seen it the fly through is here.

The only way that we were able to get there was to apply the principles that we teach on this course.
