The Job

The job of running a business (and particularly a healthcare business) is not to keep the plates spinning, contrary to the public’s belief.

It is to sweep up the mess when the plates fall off and break, to pick the cane back up and to spin the plate again a little bit better so that it stays up a little bit longer. Spinning again with maybe a bit of a nicer plate. Showing someone else who works with you how to spin plates too so that you can go on and start another plate spinning or return back to other plates on the other side of the room that have themselves falling over and smashed.

The resilience to running a business is to continue this task day after day whilst smiling and supporting the other people that you have enlisted to clean up the smashed plates and start the better ones spinning again.
