The Digital Implant Dentistry Course - why this course?

Constructing a new multi-module course for The Campbell academy is no light undertaking.

For some time, we have been developing a Digital Implant Dentistry (DID) course, alongside our other courses that we provide at The Campbell academy and it has been a big job.

I and we were motivated to construct and build this course mostly based on the fact that digital implant dentistry is a complete minefield and sometimes an overwhelming battering ram for people who find themselves feeling isolated in practice.

The truth is that you can pick up all aspects of digital implant dentistry relatively easily and relatively inexpensively, without even having to invest in massive, big pieces of hardware.

Several years ago, I presented an algorithm at the Digital Symposium in London to show how to get into digital implant dentistry without a CT scanner or an intraoral scanner (IOS), that path is still completely valid and in fact there is some suggestion that it might be more valid than it previously was.

You can access CBCT scans for your patients by outsourcing them to another provider.

It’s easier than ever to obtain those images back. You just need to make sure that the people who are scanning your patient understands scanning patients well.

You can now outsource intraoral scanning, but it might be much more accurate to take a silicon impression and ask your lab to digitise this.

There is some compelling research from Leeds University to show that the most accurate way to collect the information from the preparation of a tooth is by silicon impression, which is then digitised, as opposed to IOS.

This is something we should all think about very clearly and understand.

When you do feel that patient convenience and your understanding of the pathway warrant investment in larger bits of kit? There are open and honest discussions to have about who is looking after customers and who isn’t and about where the advantages and disadvantages of each individual system lie.

Let’s be absolutely clear, there is no company that has nailed this start to finish!!

Many of the companies are now producing bobbles and bangles associated with their digital kit and making claims that this is better than that, or this will quicken or shorten your clinical procedures etc.

It is very important to discuss with people that understand digital dentistry what the good pathways are and where the pitfalls are.

There is an awful lot of money at stake here and there is an awful lot of people speaking on digital implant dentistry that may not be as genuine as you think.

So, for us we wanted an honest and clear, practical and clinical course, that allows you to navigate the journey of digital implant dentistry to good products and good advice, but in a generic way that allows you to decide you own pathway and what is best for you and your patients.

This is backed up, as always on our clinical courses, by the use of a slack discussion group which will run and run as long as people use it and allow you to share your experiences with your peers as to what is working well and what is not.

These are not the same as Facebook groups, they are non-threatening, open and honest discussion groups, where people are happy to speak about mistakes, both clinically and in purchasing.

You also get to be a part of one of the tribes who can work with each other going forwards for the benefit of everybody else.

16 people in March start their journey for the first time. If you would like to be one of those guys, then start a conversation with us and we will see if there is a fit for both of us.
