The big leagues

It seems that many people confuse the phrase ‘the stakes are high’ with ‘the rewards are high’.

This is a fundamental misjudgement.

If and when you’re lucky enough to be promoted to play in the big leagues the stakes are

high, and the rewards are high (potentially).

It means that if you make a mistake in the big leagues or you let someone down or you misrepresent or fail to keep your promise, the costs and the repercussions are greater, more stressful and potentially more severe than those which you would have incurred when you were playing down the leagues.

Holding your hand up (and opening your wallet) when things don’t go right in the big leagues is considerably harder but for a number of reasons probably even more important.
