Snakes and ladders

Building things that are worthwhile usually takes a long time and a lot of effort, maybe a marriage or a family a career a business volunteering or any number of things.

Mostly we are conditioned to look for the ladder, the ways to get up as quickly and as early as possible.

But in reality, the greatest impact is to avoid the snakes in which form they come.

Spending all your time on ladders and no time keeping an eye out for the things that can derail you much more quickly than you build is a fool's errand and the least effective use of your time.

It can't always be the bright shiny objects, a lot of the time it's just tick, tick, tick doing the stable thing and being patient and building over time in a way that means you don't fall down to the start again.
