Show your workings

Sometimes, usually in a maths test, you get more points if you show you're working.

It means that if you get it wrong, you can demonstrate that you know what you're doing.

In most other situations in life, though, showing your workings is an excuse.

It's a way of saying to someone, "But look, I've worked really hard even though the thing you've got isn't what you asked for".

Most of the time, showing your result is better than showing your workings.
