Shaping the future again

In a couple of weeks, I am back to teach new graduates in dentistry for the first time in a long time.

Firstly, I have two sessions with a group from Trent dental foundation, two times, three hour lectures, extensively on the subject of dental implants, but more on the philosophy of being a dentist, hidden behind a thin veneer of clinical dentistry.

Secondly, I have oral surgery and “inspiration” for the Yorkshire dental foundation study day with Ian Wilson.

What should I tell them?

It’s been 11 years, since I was “allowed” to speak to VT’s and so what should I tell them now I come back?

Should I tell them about the difference between then and now? Or should I tell them about the difference between when they applied for dental school and now? (to many that seems like a broken promise)

Should I tell them what their future looks like from my perspective? Or should I tell them what their future looks like from their perspective? Can I tell someone what their future looks like from their perspective?

Should I tell them about the opportunities, or should I tell them about the challenges?

Should I tell them the dentist I speak to, wouldn’t introduce their children to dentistry, just as they’re about to start their career proper? Or should I just introduce my children if I had the chance?

Years ago, I wrote about what to say to dentist graduates and in particular, a blog called Books for dental graduates, that was one of my favourite blogs, I’ve updated the list I would tell dental graduates, perhaps we’ll do some of that too.

I was teaching on the business course last week that we run, as a part of the academy and then last night we had a video hang out as we start to produce the third project as part of that course and Amit, one of the guys on the course reminded me, that I spoke to him at a VT around 5 years ago and suggested how I inspired him to do some things in his career, that he is grateful for.

Perhaps I’ll speak to them about that.

I get one chance to chat to these guys and to try and dunt them in the right direction to be brilliant health care professionals and to have a great career and to enjoy themselves.

It is a huge responsibility but of course, the flip side of responsibility is the privilege.
