Parachutes

While I was waiting on the beach in Tenerife around about the same spot that I chatted to the lady about bracelets, the paraglider’s and base jumpers started to arrive.

Guys who jump off the mountain with a parachute on and then float around in the sky for ages, discovering thermals to raise them higher, before drifting back down to the earth and over the sea with what must be the most extraordinary view.

These guys are cool, these guys are beyond cool.

I’m lying there in my scruffy clothes, with my grey hair and scruffy beard now in my 50’s watching the guys with their parachutes converging on the midlife crisis for the adventure athlete I will never be.

I was reminded of the ladybird book of midlife crisis where the guy finds a tin of boat polish in B&Q and then realises he will never own a boat, never before having wanted to own a boat.

As I enter into my sixth decade now, I can quite clearly see the things that I could have been and I can quite clearly see the things that I will never be and I can begin to be happy with the things that I am and the things that I can be.
