No such thing as unfair

“That is unfair” is a word I hear a lot at the moment from different sources.

“COVID-19 is unfair”.

“Dentistry’s closed, that’s unfair”.

“It’s unfair that I couldn’t get back to work”.

There’s no such thing as unfair.

Certainly not in this circumstance, it’s not unfair that you get diagnosed with Cancer and it’s not unfair that you get hit by a car on your bike.

It’s not unfair that your business has had to close because of COVID-19 and it won’t be unfair when it opens ahead of someone else’s.

These are problems that we can’t control and the narrative that we use to explain the situations is the most important tool we have.

My wife has always said that the best weapon that a patient has who is diagnosed with Cancer is a positive attitude.

That’s about the narrative.

From now until the end of lockdown we could tell each other that it’s unfair and that the world is a terrible place and then get to the end of lockdown and get on with work or…

You could dismiss the ‘unfair’ and accept the situation for what it is and get on and make the best of what we’ve got at the present time.

“Get busy living or get busy dying”.

The situation is, what the situation is.

How we address the situation and the story we tell about it is within our gift and that is a gift we should all try to use.
