The weeks pass by and the experiences are quite extraordinary at the present time (although it’s extremely busy).

Next weeks major highlight will be the delivery of a teaching session on consultations on Thursday for the first time.

It’s called a ‘master class’ but that’s probably the wrong name.

I’ve been fascinated by the personal interaction for consultations for the longest time and have taken it upon myself to study this (informally) both for fun and to try to make it better in my work.

Next week, for a few individuals who’ve decided to take a punt we'll have a day of going through this information.

We’ll divide a 1 hour consultation into four parts (this is what I do every time I see a new patient) and we’ll talk about what each of those four parts are for.

The first part is a bridge to trust which is about sharing personal information, finding out about someone and listening more than you speak. There are lots of different things you can do there, to dilute the power dynamic that exists in healthcare and to show someone that they can trust you to look after them.

You can’t get to part 2 without part 1.

Part 2 is the survey, the collecting of the information and the finding out of options. It’s the technical part but there are ways to streamline that and to make it as patient centred as possible. That takes you to 30 minutes.

The third part is problem solving and solution planning, really why the patient came in the first place but they don’t want to listen to you until you’ve established a bridge to trust and you can’t then proceed unless you know what the options are, which is the second phase.

The fourth part is possible next steps and sharing information and giving permission which takes you into the after consultation situations and customer relation management.

The master class next week will have all the technical stuff about X-rays and scans and photos and all of that stuff but also much, much more and the next couples of blogs will explain a bit.

We hope to run it again and hopefully again and again.

If it’s something you’re interested in, that is to say trying to get a little bit better at a skill that you use every single day of your working life for the rest of your career, which is liable to make it more enjoyable and more profitable, then get in touch here and we’ll give you the next date.
