We had some friends round for lunch (at work) the other day.

People that I’ve known for a very long time, who I love and respect very much.

I was able to show them round and explain what we’ve done up to this point.

I was able to resist the urge to keep saying “once it’s finished” and to not point out the little niggles and problems that I see every time I was around the place.

I was almost able to be proud of what we’ve done and what we’ve achieved so far but I would only ever be able to be like that in the company of people that I trust so much.

It’s what we do isn’t it?

Our life's work, whatever that is, be it our children or our pets or our house or our work or the book that we wrote or the garden that we cultivated.

We want to show it to people who we love and trust and receive affirmation back for that which we have done.

I fear that this principle was exploded through social media to the point where we have to show everything to everyone that we don’t know and crave their recognition a thousand times a day.

The conversations I had and the messages I received after we had our friends round was definitely enough to keep me going for a few years to come.
