Life Tax

(Morag – thanks for the heads up on this)

In a conversation with one of my oldest friends Morag recently she explained that one of her friends puts money aside as a ‘life tax’ for when things go wrong. We were discussing a flat tyre on my car and how it needed fixing.

‘It’s just a cost of living’.

I love the concept of that because it removes the emotional upset of things going wrong and unexpected payments, but it made me think about a greater more important life tax which is the one that we impose on ourselves by the accumulation of the stuff that we gather.

Back to the electric garage door and the fact that I wanted an electric garage door because in theory it ‘saves time’ but it doesn’t, it’s just a gimmick.

As I write this blog it’s been broken for 8 weeks, the time it has taken to fix this has been extraordinary.

I am pretty comfortable reading the tax that I have to pay but I get much more uncomfortable when the tax is paid in time.

The fashion for middle class middle-aged men to collect as many bikes as possible (I have been guilty of this) applies the same sort of tax. More bikes to wash, more bikes to fix, more bikes to maintain, more bikes to ride. More time taken, more tax paid.

The same applies to the amount of clothes you have in your wardrobe and how much organization it takes, or the amount of televisions or computers you have, or the amount of iPhones and iPads you have and how much updating they take.

(Updating devises is the greatest life tax at the moment)

Yet again it’s funny, if we were to see tax paid in terms of time instead of money, we might have a very different view.
