Leaving something left to want

A story that I reference time and time again in these pages is the story of Tal Ben-Shahar and the book Happier.

One of the fundamental points in that book is about when he won the national championships at squash as a young man, the dedication of his 'whole life' and then never felt the happiness that he expected.

One of the problems we're encountering more and more in life is that there's not really anything left to want, not to really want maybe a better watcher or a fancier car, maybe a house with a few more bedrooms, but not really something to absolutely want to strive for, to care about.

We can get some of our Amazon products delivered on the same day, and we don't even have to wait one night to get them delivered.

We can have food of any cuisine delivered while we sit in front of a television and watch anything we want from anywhere in the world.

That's why Christmas becomes harder and harder because the anticipation is enormous, but we already have everything and so when the day comes, if we were waiting for something better, something bigger, something fancier, then we end up like Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter, screaming and shouting and ranting because it isn't quite good enough.

There are things which I covet, things that I would like to have for reasons that I don't quite understand, but what I intend to do with those one or two things is to push them back and back again to the point where I'll probably never ever have them, but at least they sit in the distance, at least they can be the things that I want, and then I can get on with everything else.
